Hopefully Giving Insomnia The Boot From My Bedroom

I have a friend that likes to come over and visit, and I wish she'd stay away. Seriously, if she never came to my house again, I'd be just fine.

My friend's name is Insomnia, and she always overstays her welcome. She stays so long, sometimes I try to go to sleep even though she hasn't gone home yet.

I'd toss and turn in bed and inevitably wake up and not be able to fall back asleep. If I wandered into the living room, there'd be Insomnia on the couch, chillin' and ready to hang out again. My goodness, she is freakin' annoying!

Or, at least that's how it used to go. I guess I've complained about Insomnia so much that the TEMPUR-Pedic Mattress folks realized I'd be a perfect to try out their new TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme mattress. They contacted me and asked me if I'd like to give one a whirl and write about my experience with it. Yeah, that day was a happy day.

I've always been interested in TEMPUR-Pedic memory foam mattresses - who can forget the commercial where one person is jumping on the bed and the other has a glass of red wine sitting on the mattress and it doesn't spill - all on the same bed! I wake up when my husband flops around too much so the very idea that I might be unaware of him shifting around really motivated me to try the TEMPUR-Pedic bed.

A couple of weeks ago my new mattress arrived... and I freaked out. The freakout came because not sleeping or not sleeping well has been a big problem for me my whole life. I worried that the TEMPUR-Pedic mattress wouldn't be as comfortable as the bed I'd been tossing or turning on for six or seven years.

Not that my bed was all that comfortable, hence the tossing and turning and waking up at four in the morning, but you know what I mean. You're more comfortable with the devil you know than the one you don't.

After the delivery guys left, I snapped the above picture of the mattress and then circled it like it was an alien from Mars. I was afraid to lie down on it! What if it felt terrible?

My kids weren't so hesitant. They were jumping on it like crazy - and so I decided to have them jump on one side and I'd lie on the other. I couldn't feel them jumping, which was awesome. Then I decided to get a glass of water (since I don't drink) and put it on one corner - like in the commercial - and have my boys jump on the other - the glass didn't fall over!

After sleeping on it these past two weeks, wow, it's a comfortable bed! The most comfortable bed I've ever owned or slept on, and it's made me realize that I never connected the quality or comfort of my bed to my inability to stay asleep. I mean, a decade ago I slept on a $99 futon during my entire first pregnancy because I was a broke 2nd year teacher living off a Compton salary... and here's my dumb behind wondering why I toss and turn and can't stay asleep.

I never really took the time to find the most comfortable bed I could and invest in the purchase. I guess I just figured Insomnia would be around no matter what I did. Pfft, all that college education and no common sense!

Anyway, over the past couple of weeks, it's still taken me a little while to actually fall asleep, but when I do finally doze off, I don't wake up as much. I sleep more deeply than I have in forever. I'm digging it and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to sleep on a regular mattress again now that I know what real comfort is.

Want to know an even COOLER thing than me staying asleep (and being less irritable and cranky as a result)? TEMPUR-Pedic generously offered to let me give away a TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme mattress to one lucky Los Angelista reader. I'll post info about the giveaway next week but I'm pretty excited to be able to share this mattress with one of you because, (tears rolling down cheeks) y'all are amazing and I love you.

As for my old friend Insomnia, now that she knows I'm not going to hang out with her all night, I'm hoping she won't come visit me at all anymore. I'm feeling very optimistic about her demise!

*Disclosure: I have partnered with Tempur-Pedic to help promote the Tempur-Cloud-Supreme mattress. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program, which includes writing about my own experiences regarding sleep and its relation to overall well being, and hosting a giveaway where the prize has been provided by Tempur-Pedic. However, as always, opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

Jameil,
Ooh, that's right! You will need a new bed so you should definitely enter.

Dena,
I know, I can't believe I'm actually getting pretty decent sleep these days. It's like a first for me.

Glad to hear you're getting some relief from the new Temper-Pedic.

Yeah, I'm all about this one! I have never slept on a new mattress. The man had one when I moved in, and we hauled it across country. When his mother died, we took the one from her guest bedroom. That was 11 years ago.

Adei,
Wot were you gonna say? Tell me!

Sundry,
I'm relieved to be sleeping better...although last night I slept on the couch in front of our air conditioner. It was just too hot and I was too exhausted to get up and walk into our room.

Everytime I hear those commercials about needing to replace mattresses every 8 years, I'm like, really??? We've had our current one for like 9 and got it second-hand from a friend who'd just bought it but was moving cross country and couldn't take it with her. Sigh.
This was interesting to read since I'm thinking about buying a new mattress myself. It's time to be a big girl and stop sleeping on the cheapy/mid-price one I bought a decade ago and woman up and get me a new one. Thanks, I will look at the Temper-Pedic line now.
