Solve My Dad's Riddles... Win a Prize
I mentioned in my post "Happy Birthday! Five Cool Things About My Dad!" that my dad really likes riddles. Turns out, he left a couple of good ones in the comments section and suggested I give a prize to the first person who solves them correctly.
If you can solve these without trying to do a web search for the answers (honor system, folks) and you're the first person to post the correct answers, you win either a $10 Coffee Bean or Starbucks gift card. How's that sound?
The winner must live in the continental U.S. and must abide by all the normal Los Angelista contest rules.
Riddle 1) A plumber and an electrician were waiting in line for the International Contractors Convention. One of them was the father of the other's son. How was this possible?
(The words "father" and "son" are used with their natural meanings. The son had never been adopted, and had always lived with his natural birth parents, who had been married to each other since a full year before the son was born.)
Riddle 2) How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the Ark?
Riddle 2) How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the Ark?
Again, you must solve BOTH and post the answer in the comments along with an email to notify you if you're correct and are the winner. First one to correctly solve wins! Good luck!
UPDATE: We Have A WINNER!!! :)
I emailed your responses to my dad and he wrote me back saying:
A plumber and an electrician were waiting in line for the International Contractors Convention. One of them was the father of the other's son. How was this possible?
The answer is that one of the two people was the father and the other was the mother. It is an interesting question because our gender stereotypes at first make us assume that all plumbers and all electricians are male. The principle of the equality of women and men may have assisted your respondents in correctly answering that question.
The second question was:
How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the Ark?
The correct answer is 0 (zero). It is an interesting question because the usual question is this:
How many animals of each species did Noah take on the Ark?
The answer to that question is 2 (two), according to the Bible:
Gen 6:19 "And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female."
The misleading wording at the beginning of the question "How many animals of each sex...?" has no definitive answer, and thus most people are so confused by that portion of the question that they fail to notice the end of the question "...did Moses take on the Ark?"
Of course, Moses did not have an Ark and therefore took 0 (zero) animals on the Ark.
Your second respondent Jasmin did not give the correct answer of 0 (zero), but deserves the prize for correctly pointing out that "It was Noah, not Moses on the Ark."!
Congratulations, Jasmin! Send me your address so I can send you a gift card! :)
