I Photographed the Food, I Should've Photographed the Friends

I just got home from a lovely birthday party/get together for my friend Sina. The photo above was the dessert spread: cherries, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, strawberry shortcake, pastries, homemade brownies, and an exquisite homemade German chocolate cake. But, now that I'm home, I realize that I photographed the wrong thing.

Seriously, forget the dessert! I should've photographed the people!

It's so nice to spend time with folks who are happy to be alive, are positive, solution-oriented, inclusive, and wear their hearts on their sleeves. Along with Sina--you know he's a genius because he works for IDEO and is a comic book nerd--I got to talk to his phenomenal sister, Mona. She's an actress/writer/producer and works in management and planning. She has one of the most visually stunning resume's I've ever seen, and made that chocolate cake for her brother. It looked like it came out of a chichi gourmet bakery and it tasted like a dream.

Then there's Razi who is an amazing mother and incredibly talented photographer--you need portraits done, she's your woman. Her husband Keith is one of the most down-to-earth guys ever and, after hearing that I'm going to Australia next month, he schooled me on the difference between Sydney and Melbourne. Razi's cousin, my dear friend, Layli, is also a phenomenal photographer--she did the photos for my latest print piece for my day job--and is an active listener and someone I can trust without reservation. That's not even everyone who was there but that gives you an idea what a great crowd of folks were in the house.

And I came home with a shot of the dessert. I'm telling myself that this error is due to me being engrossed in such fantastic conversations with everyone. Clearly, if I want photos, I have to figure out some way to get us all together again.

Yes, you should have photographed this incredibly talented bunch of people! Especially if they're photographers themselves - they wouldn't be camera-shy!

My good friend Kath in Melbourne is very competitive about the superiority of Melbourne to Sydney! Though personally I think Sydney is the more beautiful city by a long way.
