It's Halloween Again

What's the scariest book/story you've ever read? My top three would be:

1) Dracula by Bram Stoker

2) Salem's Lot by Stephen King

3) The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe

And that's about it because I don't usually read scary things.

Ooh. A collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories. It took me completely by surprise. Some of it's lurid and silly, but the one about the painter of demons with the well of inspiration, or something like that literally (pun intended) raised the hair on the back of my neck.

Also Steven King's "Pet Semetary," but probably as much because I read it when I had just moved to L.A. and was generally unnerved by culture shock at that time.
