A Los Angelista Giveaway: Moms Light Up Our Lives

Get ready to honor your mom because Sunday, May 9th, Mother's Day, will be here before you know it. Although this is prime time to get busy planning what kind of present you're going to get mom - yes, you need to come correct in the present department-, it's also nice to step back and reflect on all the non-material ways she's made your life brighter.

I'm a firm believer in appreciating the little things moms do, so when I think about the ways my mom's made my life brighter, my mind immediately turns to the every day things. For example, my mom lives 2,000 miles away but I try to talk to her daily - and my nosy sons like to say hello to her every chance they get, too. My mom's great at listening to their stories, and I always like how she asks them thoughtful questions to get them to think about the deeper values and principles at play in their experiences.

My kids particularly love hearing the stories she sometimes tells them about me from when I was a kid. - Why does my six year-old LOVE the stories of how I used to dance on the table when I was a baby and, ahem, pull my hair out on the sides of my head? My boys crack up over those stories - my mom tells them so well- and I catch them retelling them to each other over and over again.

My mom is also a big believer in fantastic room scents so when Root Candles asked me if I'd like to host a "Moms Light Up Our Lives" giveaway, I was totally down! They sent me some nice products from their "Legacy Collection" so I could check them out. I got the English Lavender set because I'm a lavender fan and I figure it might help me relax and crack my insomnia issues.

Here's what's making my house smell so fab:

1) A 12 oz. Large Veriglass Candle - nice because the candle's made from natural beeswax and essential oils. I like not feeling like my kids are inhaling crazy candle chemicals.

2) A Medina Vase Reed Diffuser - the scent is long lasting, and of course, the cool thing about diffusers is you get a consistent scent without worrying about falling asleep with a candle burning.

3) A Decorative Tassel - I'd never seen one of these before but it releases fragrance continuously for two whole months. Yes, it's already in my bedroom.

Thanks to Root, one lucky Los Angelista reader is going to win their own set!

The winner will get to choose from one of three fragrances - Sun Dried Cotton, English Lavender or Ginger Patchouli and will win one Large Veriglass Candles, a Reed Diffuser, and a Scented Tassel in Alabaster.

My mom is always there for me and for my girls. When I had surgery she lived with us for 6 months. She is a great mom!

My mom is my best friend. She is always there for me, no matter what. I can talk to her about just about anything and she doesn't judge or criticize, just listens or gives advice depending on what I need. She is a great role model as a mother, having raised 5 kids, and if I ever have kids, I hope I am able to be as great of a mom as she is.

My mom put up and still puts up with my father. I told her St Peter will make her a saint when she gets to Heaven.

My MIL was alwys in my corner and never had a bad word to say about me. I miss her dearly.
My dad died of cancer when I was 10. Struggling with her own grief - atop hospital debt, depression, early menopause, & a job she hated - she somehow managed to raise a pretty darn good kid. She paid for as much of my college as she was able, & even though I'm her only child & she'd rather I stay nearby, she also pushed me to leave home for better opportunities. She continues to inspire me to be a better, more successful, more compassionate person.

my mom is wonderful but the moms who light up my life are really these two amazing women who i have formed a sisterhood with. we are a group of mixed mamas, all cali transplants and having them in my life as extended family adds so much joy and value to my own family. and keeps me sane. i love their complete acceptance of me, how we all love and treasure one another's children and the radiant energy they both shine onto my life.

My mom is always there for me - she loves the wee ones as much as I do. I can call her and she does everything she can to help whether it's finding a recipe from my childhood, picking up the wee ones and watching them or giving me an address I lost.

Email is in my profile, or you can respond to this comment :)

My mom is amazing for 3 reasons:
    1) She has more fashion sense than I will ever have.
    2) She knows when to let me make mistakes but also gives great advice.
    3) She has instilled in me a love of family, education, God and service.

This weekend a friend of mine was frantically trying to find a babysitter and ended up using someone she'd never met before. I realized how lucky I am to have my Mom & MIL so close & willing to watch my kids when needed. The kids love spending time with both grandma's and look forward to when we go out and they get to stay with grandma.
