What Degree Should I Get Next?

On Sunday I thought I should be a lawyer or writer. Then I reflected and decided to ditch the JD and started looking up MFA programs on-line. I came to the conclusion that they cost too much.

On Monday I was just a writer....and a lottery winner. I have to win the lottery to pay for the MFA.

On Tuesday I was contemplating business school and writing. Everyone I know who has been to business school is paid so maybe if I go to business school too, I'll be rich. And then I'll enroll in a part time MFA program when I'm not out making the bigger and biggest bucks. (Yeah, right.)

On Wednesday, today, I am contemplating a Ph.D. in sociology/urban education and being a writer. I am bothered by seeing Black children being treated so differently in classrooms and my sense of outrage over it is fueling my desire to study this phenomenon. Or maybe I could write a fictional book about it...somehow do a fictionalized composite of all the teachers I've seen over the years and all the schools I've seen over the years.

I googled "Best MFA Programs in America" and "Should I Get An MFA".

One of the hits led me to this test that asks a series of questions that helps determine what graduate degree I should pursue next. (Cuz I'm not using the one I got at Columbia for anything and I clearly am not moving overseas again to do anything in international education.)

The quiz results spit out this: You Should Get a PhD in Liberal Arts (like political science, literature, or philosophy) You're a great thinker and a true philosopher. You'd make a talented professor or writer.

I don't think the quiz helped me much but then I start thinking: Jane Austen didn't have an MFA. James Joyce didn't have an MFA. I just need to stop being lazy and write. I know, I've said it before. I swear, I'm going to do it!
