The New "Do"

I caught a reflection in a mirror this afternoon, and didn't even recognize myself. Who was that in the restroom with me?

And then, I remembered, "Hey dork, that's you!!!"

Fortunately, I am sparing us all any restroom photos that may (or may not) exist. And I will chalk my momentary lapse of identification powers up to exhaustion. The clock is ticking and I only have four days till I hop on a plane and head back to LA. Four days to try to squeeze in everybody and everything I have yet to experience.

So, since "chop off hair" can be crossed off my to-do list, I have to make some tough decisions about what to do with the time I have left.

Today though, I really wanted to go back to the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette, IL. I got my first bee sting there when I was only three years old so it seems somehow fitting that the first picture of myself with short hair that I decide to share is in its lovely gardens.

I spent a lot of time there this morning. Praying, thinking about my life and asking God for guidance and protection. Asking for help as far as what comes next for me. I certainly can't figure things completely out on my own -- and if you need proof that that statement is true, ask yourself why a grown woman still uses the word "dork"?

Anyway, I know, this is not a super zoomed-in photo of every kink, twist and spiral in my hair... but that's alright. This picture is me, I still have a camera and, hopefully, there's always tomorrow.

Gorgeous! What were you worried about? I liked your cut before, too, but I think this frames your face beautifully, and you have amazing hair.

On a more serious note, best of luck in terms of fitting in what you want/need to in the last few days. I hope the spiritual time was fruitful.

You look WONDERFUL! the new cut really suits you and helps your lovely smile stand out even more.

I'm glad you had time at the House of Worship....I miss it terribly. I also don't envy you trying to fit everything and everyone in Chicago into a few days...when we go back I know it will be a whirlwind....

Enjoy it for all us ex-chicagoans!

Doulala,
Thank you so much! Yes, I got them at Express last year! Love them!

NYC/CR,
Thank you! Or is it grazie? :) I need to brush up on the Italian because I finally got my copy of the "Black Vogue" and I can't read the articles!

Cyndee,
You're waay hotter! I'm gonna fry an egg on your arm tonight!

Jen,
Thank you so much. I think I was worried about a generic "looking ugly". It sounds silly, but it's true. I feel like I can see my eyes more now. And yes, it was definitely fruitful. Very much so.

Anali,
Thanks! I love it, too! I can't believe I was worried either. I think I thought I was going to look like an alien. Not sure what.

Yolanda,
Thanks, Yolanda! I appreciate the compliment!

Jameil,
Just trying to ride on your fabulous coattails! But yes, thank you for your moral support! I know you had to be sick of my back and forth about it! :)

Pooneh,
Thank you and oh my goodness, I need to write you back! The crazy thing is I've been out here for almost five weeks and it still doesn't seem long enough. It's better than only 5-7 days though, that's for sure. I miss going to the House of Worship SO much. It's nice to be there and just feel how peaceful it is.

Houseonahill,
Thank you so much! I feel pretty marvelous, too. And LOL, speaking of January, if you do head up to Wilmette, you should go up there when it's warm. It's lovely in the winter as well but the garden is just fabulous to relax and meditate in.

Jillybean,
Thank you and I love your blog name!

Macdaddy,
Why, thank you for saying so on both fronts! I used to be a little self-conscious about my smile because I got teased in high school for having big lips and my teeth are a little crooked on the bottom. I actually got called snaggle tooth at one point. So I try to smile as much as I can now to compensate for all the lack of smiling I did back in the day.

Felicity,
Thank you! I love the cut, too. I need to import Eric to LA. I want to become successful enough so he can just come live with me and hook me up every day!

Nerd Girl,
Thank you so much. I feel pretty wonderful as well these days.

DMAC/Anonymous,
Thank you! Yeah, it's super thick, which is why the super thin straight ends had to go. It was just getting to be ridiculous. After a year of growing it out, I really just needed to put that overprocessed nightmare behind me. So, you are incredibly sweet to say that about my skin. I tend to only see the wrinkles and all that. I use Neutrogena Healthy Defense with SPF 45 and a Clinique Anti-Gravity eye cream. Since I've been at my mom's though I've been jacking her Philosophy stuff and I loove it!

Nick,
Thank you! Maybe I'll start a hair trend with the folks I know! They'll all want to get the "Liz" cut or soemthing... and then the earrings, too. ;)

Lola,
Thanks... and I miss your blog. I've been really bad about reading blogs while I've been on vacation. I'll be by soon though. I have only three days left here!

Bygbaby,
Aww, thank you! You've been so encouraging from when I first started thinking about this. It's appreciated!

Brotherkomrade,
Thank you! I do think I'll keep this for awhile. I'm definitely feeling it -- I hope it behaves when I get home to much drier LA!

Claudia,
I'm feeling pretty gorgeous! Thank you! I do love it!

Citizen,
Now I have another reason to thank God for Ian's blog! He reconnected us! Thank you so much for your sweet thoughts. It's appreciated!

Anonymous,
Yes, transformative, but I'm still trying to figure out exactly where is the butterfly flying to.

I have been having smilar man in the mirror moments. But it's because I'm fat and need to lose about 20 pounds.

Your hair looks great. I'd love for my wife to do some chopping, btu she's scared to death.

Beautiful photo op. Hair looks great. I know that feeling of waking up one morning and not recognizing yourself. There is some adventure in that sometimes. It is like you can be someone completely different.

Los Angelista,
Hair looks great.
Did anyone ever get your song reference, ya know, the NWA “8Ball” with Easy-E? “Ridin’ down Slauson down towards Crenshaw…”
Funny, done that myself, lol. Do like the Starbucks up from there, where Leimert Ave, W Vernon and Crenshaw come together…

SWD (sounds like a disease, lol!)

IANSJ,
Thanks for saying it looks fantastic! I'm already wondering what it'll look like when it starts to grow back. I'm excited to find out!

Keith,
I hope your wife takes the plunge and goes for it. And how fabulous that you are so supportive. I think my husband is less than psyched about this but he'll get used to it. And I have that same 20 pound man in the mirror that you do! But gosh, if I lost 20 pounds, I still wouldn't be slim by Hollywood Standards.

Shiona,
Why, thank you so much for the compliments and positive thoughts. It's much appreciated!

1969,
Glad you love it! Thank you! And yes, it is SO thick. It's what I remember from when I was a little girl. I missed that so much. So glad I did this. So glad!

If you ever get the chance to go visit the Baha'i HOW, you should. It's so peaceful and beautiful.

Ehav Ever,
Thanks for saying that. It is truly an adventure, especially since I'm still learning how to work with it! And I took the photo with the self-timer on my camera. I think the guides there thought I was crazy! :)

Randi,
Thank you so much! I have chickened out a couple of times and not gone thru with cutting, but this time it had to happen. You can do it!

SWD,
Nope, no one fessed up that they knew it was NWA. That was my jam back in the day. And thanks for the compliment about my hair. Maybe I'll roll thru that Starbucks when I'm home in LA tomorrow.

You look fabulous! I really like the picture too, and how the only other human in the photo...way off in the distance somehow knew to color coordinate with you. :)

Somehow I came across your blog - probably a google reader suggestion - and lo and behold here you are in front of the House of Worship! I grew up (till 6 or so) running through those gardens and now I try to make it down as often as possible. There's just something about it - I always go into the cornerstone room. Last visit, I brought my 3 yr old who SAT on the cornerstone. Woops. Am feeling reconnected with the Faith - thanks.
